The project: Clean Air Management in the Romania-Ukraine Transboundary Area is implemented under the Hungary-Slovakia-Romania-Ukraine ENPI Cross-Border Cooperation Programme 2007-2013 (www.huskroua-cbc.net), and is co-financed by the European Union through the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument. The overall objective of the Programme is to intensify and deepen cooperation in an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable way between Zakarpatska, Ivano-Frankivska and Chernivetska regions of Ukraine and eligible and adjacent areas of Hungary, Romania and Slovakia.

Maramures Environmental Protection Agency is a public institution with legal personality, under the National Environmental Protection Agency, having the status of decentralized public service, funded from the state budget.

Maramures Environmental Protection Agency meets, at county level, the duties of the National Environmental Protection Agency that implements policies, strategies and legislation on environmental protection.

Maramures Environmental Protection Agencyis issuing regulatory acts in the field of environmental protection for activities impacting the environment, is performing air quality monitoring and implementing environmental legislation in the areas of biodiversity, waste and hazardous chemicals, soil and subsoil, in accordance with the in force legislation.

Maramures Environmental Protection Agency was established on August 1, 1990 according to Government Decision no. 983/1990, and Order of the Minister of Environment no. 11/1990. Currently, the agency operates under Government Decision no. 1000/2012 on the reorganization and operation of the National Environmental Protection Agency and public institutions subordinated to it, as supplemented and amended.

Maramures Environmental Protection Agencyis continuously working to preserve resources that our county holds and protect the quality of the components in the environment. The last years, specialists from the agency have implemented several projects with european financial funds for environmental improvements and institutional capacity building.

The project: "Clean air management in the Romania-Ukraine transboundary area (CLAMROUA)" is financed by the Hungary-Slovakia-Romania-Ukraine ENPI Cross-Border Cooperation Programme 2007-2013 and co-financed from the state budget. The project was proposed and is conducted in the context of the provisions of Directive 2008/50/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe. This directive recommends continuous improvement of methods for monitoring and evaluation of air quality, and providing accurate public information, both directions embedded in the specific objectives of the project.

Other project simplemented by Maramures Environmental Protection Agency after January 1, 2007, with European funds are, as following:

- Safe management of mining waste facilities (SAFEMANMIN), funded by the EU Framework Programme for RTD FP6, January 1st, 2007 – June 30, 2008 (project leader: BIUTEC - Vienna, MEPA acting as partner);

- Sustainable management of Natura 2000 Site Ignis, financed by the Romanian Sectoral Operational Programme "Environment" 2007-2013, October 1st, 2010 - June 30, 2014 (MEPA is project leader);

- RoUaSoil: Romania-Ukraine cross-border area - Management of the contaminated sites with oil products, funded by the Hungary-Slovakia-Romania-Ukraine ENPI Cross-Border Cooperation Programme 2007-2013, October 1st, 2012 - September 30, 2014 (project leader: Technical University of Cluj-Napoca North University Center of Baia Mare, MEPA is acting as partner).
